Day 8 in C.A.P - Do not be greedy

Delivering a message is not an easy task.

It involves several processes , which is detecting, researching, reading, selecting and packaging an information. There is a huge amount of information, messages, comments, news, journals circulating all over the world. It is hard to differentiate the true and false, it's harder to conclude and summarise the content, it's hardest to pick and choose the one or two points to deliver.

The thing is, one would become so excited as he found something to share with. He feel the audience should know A, B, C, D. He would end up giving loads of "feeling good" info without realizing the fact that readers could only accept one or two messages : it could be a sentence, a statistic, a picture, that's all for it.

Even so, the process of reading and grabbing mountains of information could not be skipped. It just like shooting the arrow through an apple. Full efforts needed to pull the bow back before you could hit the target accurately.

That is why advertiser always squeeze everything they want to say into a slogan. To prevent the audiences from forgetting or overlooking them, the advertising just keep repeating. They are not greedy, but they are greedy indeed.

Lessons of the day : To not be greedy, be greedy. To target on something, make more efforts. Quantity comes before quality.

Day 7 in C.A.P - Alexander's 3 Great Wishes

Alexander The Great, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed.

He called his generals and said, "I will depart from this world soon, I have three wishes, please carry them out without fail."

With tears flowing down their cheeks, the generals agreed to abide by their king's last wishes.

"My first desire is that", said Alexander, "My physicians alone must" carry my coffin."

"Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected in my treasury".

"My third and last wish is that both my hands be kept dangling out of my coffin".

The people who had gathered there wondered at the king's strange wishes. But no one dared bring the question to their lips.. Alexander's favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart.

"O king, we assure you that all your wishes will be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?"

At this Alexander took a deep breath and said:"I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. Lessons to be learnt from last 3 wishes of King Alexander...I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor on this earth can really cure any body. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let not people take life for granted.

The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the path to the graveyard is to tell People that not even a fraction of gold will come with me. I spent all my life Greed of Power, earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is a sheer waste of time to chase wealth.

About my third wish of having my hands dangling out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty handed into this world and empty handed I go out of this world".

With these words, the king closed his eyes.Soon he let death conquer hi
m and breathed his last. . . .

Stories of the day : People strive for 3 things in their life : health, wealth, prosperity. Though, it should be done in a sustainable way.

Day 6 in C.A.P - Audience's "taste"

For long the climate has changed from " what media do to people " to " what people do to media". The practice goes on until today.

Mr Jee Yuan, the head of Publication Section ( they call it Utusan Section ) seems to has a particular and critical mind. He writes and publishes educational and informative topics in Utusan Konsumer. Therefore Utusan Konsumer is not a newspaper indeed. It tells what's happening now and depicts the future.

It's a wonderful chance that he gave us a task to write about some topics. While it was challenging as he wants straightforward facts and analysis. He reminded us the rule, ' Put yourself into the audience's shoes. Don't write something that you understand while others don't. You are not writing academically, but you are delivering messages to the public. '

Yes, the public are not passive, we are going to match their demands. However it doesn't mean to give what they want. There is a communication way of it : try to understand what they need, why they behave so, how would they react ---- in a rational basis.

Reminder of the day : Media are for people, people rely on media. Although the understanding of audience can help to deliver message effectively, but not to forget communicators should deliver message with responsibility.

Day 5 in C.A.P - Worms!

Warming sun outside, when it was a good day for farming~!

An organic farming education section was held today. Participants were from NGOs of Sri Lanka. They were cheerful and energetic early in the morning though some of them were 60 years old and above.

There is a small farm behind the office. Different species of plants and vegetables could be seen. We felt so excited and interesting when things go connected to nature. What caught out eyes most is the natural digger ----earthworms!!

Earthworms are important in creating organic soil. It decompose food wastage such as vegetables and fruits in order to provide the soil with microorganisms that could give nutrient and minerals to the plant. They are good, awesome, and given a wonderful mission by God. Without them, where are you going to look for organic vegetables and fruits?

Thank you, worms. But so sorry i still afraid to near you, hold you, and look at you. I won't shout in front of others but will scream from the bottom of my heart. I know i shouldn't think of you like that. I'll keep trying to overcome my bias and narrow scopes on you, truly. We actually still have time to cope with each other. I hope i can do my best in these 8 weeks.

Gift of the day : They work so hard for the earth, in fact for us. What have you done?

Day 4 in C.A.P - Values

" We are correcting something which had disappeared in society today. That is not easy. "
                                                                                        ------ S.M. Mohamed Idris

Dear Mr President, though we haven't seen each other, however no doubt that you are the core spirit of the organisation. You inspire the staff members with good values and beliefs, you guide them with strict rules, so that they could become the pioneers to service for mankind.

You practice the norms and values which will bring happiness and harmony among nature and humankind. You doubt and question the development ideology brought from the western country. That is why the organisation is here, to inspect the bad ones, and promote the good ones.

Looking forward to have a dialogue session with you, Mr President.

Inspiration of the day : Practice and pray, pray and practice. To prevent values from disappearing, just practice till become your flesh and blood.

Day 3 in C.A.P - What food can human eat?

High Fructose Corn Syrup ( HFCS ),
the commercially preferred artificial sweetener,
substitute for common sugar.
HFCS has no place for human nutrition, it even more harmful than white sugar.
It causes,
severe heart disease,
kidney and liver failure,
diabetes,
obesity
and metabolic syndrome.

No instant noodles!!!
it contains 856 mg of sodium per pack.
High ingestion of sodium poisoned our body.

Stop consuming margarine.
They are rather chemicals than food.

In addition, reduce the consumption of
cokes,
junk food,
bak zhang,
smarties,
mentoes
milo.

Conclusion of the day : True Light solves it. Just purify the foods and eat with gratitude. =)

Day 2 in C.A.P - Still the America

Students from University of South Florida ( USF ), America visited us today. 5 colours of people gathered in the room. We spent a wonderful afternoon discussing and sharing issues happened in both nation.

Such discussion surprised me. Certainly because the topics that had discussed were deep into the core problem. What I gained was indeed hardly to find in any newspapers or even journals. Those were the experiences and knowledge from the experts and seniors. On top of that, now i realized how YKT can be applied !

The discussion started with environmental issues, mainly about rare earth. Lynas, mining giant in Perak were the issues deeply discussed. We know how hazardous and dangerous the materials, yet our voice been ignored.

Why ? Perhaps most of the people in the room were wondering.

' We had several demonstrations to against the setting up of the Lynas factory, ' says the speaker. ' In our country, you must have permission in order to march on the road. '

' What happened next ? What is the action of the government ? ' one of the foreign students asked.

' Well, at last they still sending semi-manufactured products here, and those products have high radiation. The factory is operating. Our government has do nothing on it. ' Speaker replied, and he continued to the deep point, ' In fact the Australian know the rare earth is hazardous, and yet they want the third world country to take it. '

Bingo ! A question in my heart : who define the world as First , Second and Third?  On what basis?

' I would like to comment something.' Dr Kaw, professor of USF, formerly a malaysian, suddenly voice out, ' You know, the dominant still exist. Obama gave a call to the Prime Minister after winning the general election. Obama congratulated the Prime Minister and reminded him the free trade agreement. Actually we do not know what is inside the agreement. We do not know how it affect the public life and the environment. In fact in America, a lot of news and messages are covered. Recently a whistle blower had just been arrested. Obama speaks about human rights and freedom, but in another way he's doing something adverse. He even covered the news of TPP agreement in the begining. Before the agreement is signed, no one knew about it. And the TPP is a dominant of America to those countries. '

' Yea, any messages and informations that could not be spread here will be given a cop "sulit", means confidential,'  says the speaker. ' We tried to get data of tobacco use from the Ministry of Health but fail. Some of our data are taken from WHO. The data and information from the Ministry are selected. Thankyou Dr.Kaw, if Mr President is here, he probably would agree with you. '

Two things that I want to point out :
      1. Everything happens in contexts. Environmental issues are interconnected with social, economic, and political context. When we look into the issue deeply, they are truly interconnected.
.2. The colonial era had ended, yet it's not the end. The dominant is still there, the power is still within the leaders of the so called First World country, the belief of "America's Dream" is still exist.

Reflection of the day : Thank you to all lecturers especially Pn.Wang, Dr.Mus and Dr Mahyuddin who taught me in YKT courses . Those terms : Hegemony, Culture imperialism, Power, Class, Modernization..........they were so real today !

Day 1 in C.A.P - Confusion

We entered the room, an old man came into sight.
' Well, take the chair and have a seat. '
We sat on the chair, behaved like a first-day intern should behave. Still, keep looking around, hardcover books, magazines, files.......the education sector should have some cleaning.

Mr Azmi, they called him Cikgu Azmi, an elderly with a round, old glasses stared at us for a few seconds.
' Why C.A.P ? ' he asked so directly, without any hesitation.
There's a long silence between us. Of course this was a spotted question, we have answers in our mind.
' To learn to create awareness among the consumers.'
' To know about the operation of an NGO.'
' To know how to make an event. '

Our answers did not satisfied him.
' Why Communication? ' he continued.
This question was so familiar for us. But this could hardly give an overall picture. Then we decided to conclude ,' to persuade , sir. '

' Persuade? ' He finally move his glasses. ' To persuade what? To persuade the public? For what purpose? So that they could buy things that you want them to buy? '

Hmm, true.

Without expecting response from us, he continued, 'Do you know all mechanisms u learn is to ask others to consume more, buy more, and you make more profits from it? You don't care whether the things are really necessary, you just use the best strategy to reach your target goal. And that's why people buy things unnecessarily, then they claim they have not enough money. '

' What we do here is to counter you, the communication professionals. You create advertisement, we create counter advertisement. You persuade others, we ask the people to aware of you. '

'But sir, ' one of us voice out, ' Persuasive are not just for marketing, it could be also helpful in social aspects.'

' Yes, but how many percentage of  social campaigns and social advertisement outside? '

Again there remained silence.

Before the door close, Cikgu Azmi talk again , ' Perhaps you will always in contradict within these 8 weeks. But i hope you learn something there. '

Question of the day : What am i going to do? Who am i going to be?
